Energy Tips

From Frank Sanns

Some appliances such as toasters, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners and air compressors consume great amounts of energy when they are in use.  Fortunately they are only used intermittently and for brief periods of time.  When these appliances are in use, each consumes energy at the rate of $800 per year.

TIP: Use these appliances as briefly as possible.

Appliances such as TVs, DVD players, cable boxes, and stereos consume 3 to 18 watts each WHEN TURNED OFF.  A typical entertainment setup with all of the above appliances plugged in to the wall but turned off will cost $34 per year.

TIP: Use a switched outlet or power-strip to turn the power off to these appliances when they are not in use.

Cell phone chargers and other personal electronic devices also consume power when they are plugged into the wall.

TIP: Unplug all items that have a transformer (plastic box) for a plug or along the power cord when they are not actively being used.  If it feels warm to the touch, it is using energy.

All appliances turn their energy into heat.  In summer months with air conditioning running, the cost to use all appliances will be double to triple their normal energy consumption.  This is due to the air conditioner needing to eliminate the extra heat that each appliance generates.

TIP:  Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs and turn off all appliances when not in use.  This is not only good energy conserving but it saves significantly more money and energy in the summer months.
